Through this project, I wanted to evolve Barnes & Noble and create a more robust yet elegant visual identity.

My research started by looking at how long the brand has lasted since 1873 and how it was able to become a nationwide brand that almost everyone knew.

Using this as a starting point, I decided that the new identity should pay homage to that history while nodding to the brand’s familiarity and omnipresence. Furthermore, I wanted the brand to connect to the contemporary and highlight up and coming writers, artists, and creators.

Although Barnes & Nobles is known for its brick and mortar experience, it felt necessary to enhance its online experience too. Real customer reviews have shown that Barnes & Nobles website was too overwhelming and inconsistent to use.

My approach to their web design was to simplify the consumer’s search for what they need. This includes a tidy navigation menu and a smart
search bar.
